Math

Elizabeth Learning Center

Mr. Arteaga

Mr. Arteaga teaches a variety of subjects which include Computer Science, Discrete Math, and Pre-Calculus. His course on Discrete Math deals with every day math and will provide the knowledge to acquire any technical or hands-on career such as being a carpenter, plumber or any other blue collar job that does not require much mathematics. His Pre-Calculus course is a starting point for students that will prepare them for Calculus. With these courses, a student can pursue a career in mathematics such as engineering careers. Mr. Arteaga attended Cerritos College and California State Dominguez Hills. He enjoys teaching Discrete Mathematics because it deals with math that can be used in daily life such as income tax, credit cards, home ownership and other math used almost every day.

Mr. Ikeda

Mr. Ikeda is a middle school teacher who teaches grades 6th-8th grade math. Throughout the course, students get a feel for algebra, geometry, measurement, functions, and so forth.  When obtaining his degree, he attended Cedarville University and Cal Poly Pomona. Mr. Ikeda loves to teach math because of the challenges in teaching it. Not only that, but he also wants to influence students' personal development and skills. He is able to gain better communication skills to guide students to think more critically and become great problem solvers.

Ms. Kouli

Ms. Kouli is a 6th and 7th grade math teacher at ELC.  Not only does she teaches math, but she also teaches science and Arabic to the middle school students. When obtaining her degree, she attended National University.

   Ms. Vargas

Ms. Vargas teaches Algebra 1, which she describes as the introductory course that opens the doors to all other areas of higher-level mathematics. Algebra prepares students for college study or careers in science, math, technology, or engineering. She explains it also provides a pathway into becoming a math teacher, stockbroker, a financial planner or an accountant. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Finance, Real Estate, and Law from California State Long Beach. She then completed her teaching credential from California State Los Angeles. Ms. Vargas expresses that mathematics is a language that can be used to make sense of the world. With math there are no good or bad answers because they're either right or wrong and no matter which way you take to find an answer, everyone can come together and agree on only one possible solution. Ms. Vargas says that by learning and teaching math, she has gained a more analytical view in life. She explains that mathematics is now a way of living for her and it has connected her educational experience into a much more grounded style of living.

Mr. Serrano

Mr. Serrano teaches High School, Special Education, Algebra and Geometry. He explains that Algebra is the course that opens the door to all areas of study in mathematics. It also provides a comprehensive teaching of the fundamental aspects of problem solving. Geometry, on the other hand, teaches students the relationships between figures and properties that make figures unique. He likes teaching these courses because he likes to see the excitement in students’ faces when they get the correct answer after a multi-step equation. Mr. Serrano attended California State University of Los Angeles. He says that he has gained lots of knowledge from his own students and he has realized the different ways in which they learn. He’s learned many strategies that have helped him accommodate the learning needs of his students. .

Mr. Offorka

Mr. Offorka teaches High School Geometry and Algebra 2. He explains that Geometry allows students to develop the ideas of congruence and similarity through transformations. Algebra 2 extends students’ understanding of functions and real numbers, which increases the tools that students have for modeling the real world. There are a number of careers that revolve around the knowledge of mathematics. For example, engineering, construction, radiology, economics, physicists, and teaching, to name a few. Mr. Offorka attended National University and he says that he enjoys teaching these courses because he has fun teaching it. He also says that nothing is more rewarding than impacting the lives of students with what he knows.

Mr. Munoz

Mr. Munoz is a high school teacher who teaches Algebra 2 and Geometry.  He attended the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, and graduated in 1995. Mr. Munoz enjoys teaching math because it allows students to be able to think critically and be able to talk about numbers.

Mr. Perez

Mr. Perez is an 8th-grade CCSS math teacher and middle school Leadership teacher. Along with these roles, he also teaches Virtual Business. Mr. Perez attended Cerritos College and got his bachelor's degree at California State University, Long Beach. He even went into higher education and earned his master's degree at California State University, Dominguez Hills. His passion for teaching this math course comes from believing in his students that they can also achieve and go to higher education. Knowing that he is impacting the lives of his students gives him all the satisfaction that he needs to love the job he's doing.

Mr. De La Torre

Mr. De La Torre is 6th grade math and science teacher.  The math course is about Ratios, percent's, fractions, decimals, coordinate plane, expressions and equations, and geometry. He attended California State University Dominguez Hills when obtaining his degree. He enjoys teaching math because they are very broad subjects and it opens doors to many answers, ideas, and strategies. As an educator, he loves to see his students collaborate, discuss, and and create their own strategies/ideas especially when it has to do with math. The possibilities are endless with math as there is no one way of doing things, but several ways to come up with an answer!
